Road Trip from San Diego
Surf before breakfast and desert stars after dinner. Nowhere else in California are the ocean and the desert this close together, which is what makes a five day trip out of San Diego feel much longer than it is.

What to do while you are here
This is the gentlest of the three California start cities. More compact than Los Angeles, easier to drive, and with roughly 260 sunny days a year the weather is close to a given. If this is your first time driving in the US, start here.
The perfect short trip
Day one is La Jolla, with a Supercharger right at UTC. Day two climbs to Julian, a gold-rush town at 4,200 feet that is genuinely known for apple pie. Days three and four are Anza-Borrego and Palm Springs, and day five brings you back.
Why start from San Diego?
It is more relaxed than LA, closer to the desert, and the weather barely varies. The airport is also unusually close to the city, which matters on arrival day.
