Carmel to San Simeon is about 90 miles and takes a full day if you do it properly. There are pullouts every few minutes and you will want most of them. Bixby Bridge is the famous one, Pfeiffer Beach has the keyhole rock, and both get busy by mid-morning.

Clifftop camping at Kirk Creek

Kirk Creek Campground is $35 a night and sits on the cliff directly above the ocean. You can watch for whales from the rooftop tent. It books out on recreation.gov and it is worth the effort.
