Road Trip from San Francisco

Fog on the bridge, redwoods to the north, and Highway 1 running south. San Francisco works as either end of the coastal route, and it is the better one to finish on if you like arriving somewhere with restaurants.

The coast in reverse

South through Santa Cruz and Monterey into Big Sur gives you the same coast as the LA route in reverse. Worth knowing: driving north to south puts you in the ocean-side lane, so if the views matter more than the destination, start here and finish in Los Angeles.

Redwoods & wine country

North of the bridge, Muir Woods is 30 minutes and the redwood coast keeps going for hours. East, Napa and Sonoma. Both make good short additions if you have a spare day at the start.
