Joshua Tree by Tesla
Yucca trees that look drawn rather than grown, granite boulders dropped across the desert, and after sunset a silence that people find genuinely unsettling the first night. It is two to three hours from Los Angeles and the complete opposite of the coast.

Hidden Valley and Arch Rock are short walks and both worth it. Keys View is the sunset spot. At night this is one of the darkest accessible parks in Southern California, and you do not need equipment, only your eyes and twenty minutes to adjust.
Free camping on BLM land
