Family Road Trip

The hard part of a family road trip is never the driving. It is the stretch between four in the afternoon and bedtime, when everyone is tired and the campground is still an hour out. Short days fix that, and an EV makes short days easy to plan.

Pick the route by drive time, not mileage

Two routes are built for short days: the five-day Surf & Desert Escapade out of San Diego keeps every leg under two hours, and the seven-day Grand Circle spaces the long stretches between parks. Zion runs a free shuttle to every trailhead, so you park once and forget the car. Every park on both routes runs a Junior Ranger program – a booklet, a ranger who swears them in, and a badge they will still have in ten years.

The rooftop tent sleeps two adults. The kids get the cabin, where Camp Mode holds the temperature all night with the windows up – no bugs, no five-a.m. cold, and a movie on the screen after a long hiking day. The cooler and camp kitchen mean dinner does not depend on finding a town with something still open at eight.

Charging stops are recess

Twenty minutes at a Supercharger is an annoyance on your own and a gift with kids. The planner puts stops where there is something to do – a playground, a diner, an overlook – so the day paces itself instead of you negotiating it.
