Road Trip from San Francisco

The Golden Gate in fog, redwood giants to the north, and Highway 1 running south: San Francisco is the endpoint of our Pacific Coast tour — and an equally strong start for the coast in reverse or a Yosemite detour.

Pacific Coast Highway south of San Francisco

The coast in reverse

From San Francisco you drive via Santa Cruz and Monterey to Big Sur — the same highlights as our 10-day tour, just southbound. Superchargers in Daly City, Santa Cruz, and Monterey pace the legs; the 17-Mile Drive and Monterey Bay Aquarium are en route.

Redwoods & wine country

To the north wait Muir Woods (30 minutes) and the redwood coast; to the east, Napa and Sonoma. Both are effortless electric — California’s charging network is the densest in the USA.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes — the Pacific Coast route works both directions, one-way on request. South-to-north puts you on the ocean side; north-to-south keeps the sun at your back.

Very — 3.5 hours east, with charging in Groveland and Yosemite Valley. Our concierge plans the detour including campground reservations.

Half Moon Bay State Beach (45 minutes south) for your first coastal night, or Samuel P. Taylor beneath redwoods to the north — both bookable on reservecalifornia.com.

Cooler than you’d think: summer fog is normal (“Karl the Fog”), and September/October are the clearest months. Pack a warm layer for coastal camping.

The 10-day Pacific Coast Highway (LA → SF) ends in San Francisco — final charge in Daly City, final leg Santa Cruz → Golden Gate.
