The sentence you find in every forum
"Forget Death Valley in an EV – the nearest charger is 200 km away in Las Vegas."
You read this repeatedly in German-language forums. It's well meant, and it's wrong. Not slightly imprecise – wrong in the number that matters.
Death Valley is still the most demanding park on our routes. Just for different reasons than the ones being discussed.
The number, corrected
The nearest fast charger is in Beatty, Nevada – roughly 43 miles, about 69 km, from Furnace Creek. Not 200 km, and not Las Vegas.
That changes the planning fundamentally. 69 km is a fallback you can keep in your back pocket. 200 km would be a wall.
There is power in the park – just not the kind you expect
There are chargers inside the park:
- Furnace Creek / The Oasis – several charge points fed by the resort's solar installation, split between the Ranch and the Inn. Paid.
- Stovepipe Wells – charge points behind the general store. Free, according to several reports.
And here's where most plans fall apart: these are Level 2 destination chargers, not Superchargers.
A report from January 2026 shows the scale of the difference: 7.8 kWh in 50 minutes. That isn't a fault, that's the normal order of magnitude for Level 2. A Supercharger delivers many times that in the same time.
In practice this means: you charge overnight where you sleep. You do not top up in passing. Anyone arriving expecting a 20-minute charge and onward travel has mis-planned before setting off.
Two problems that never come up in the forum threads
I now consider these more important than raw distance – and I have never seen either raised in the German threads.
1. No mobile signal, no power
Reception inside the park is very poor in places. And some charge points need a connection in order to be activated.
A charger that is physically fine but won't activate is as useless to you as a broken one. If you depend on app activation, know that in advance rather than discovering it standing in front of the thing.
Practical consequence: download maps, charger locations and anything else you need while you still have signal. That applies to Death Valley generally, not just to charging.
2. Heat disables equipment
There are reports of charge points failing in extreme heat – roughly above 46 °C.
In Death Valley in summer that isn't an edge case, it's the default. The park has earned its reputation.
Which yields something practical: charge at night or early morning. There it isn't just more comfortable, it's more reliable. And it fits the rhythm anyway, since Level 2 needs the night regardless.
And yes, outages happen
There are documented weekends where some charge points were out of service and a small queue formed.
So it's worth checking PlugShare before you set off. Travellers report there with dates, so you can see what worked recently. That's not a Death Valley peculiarity – but an outage bites harder here, because the alternative isn't around the corner.
We deliberately don't quote a fixed number of working chargers. The figures vary by source and by date, and a number that's no longer true when you arrive is worse than no number at all.
How we plan it
- Go in with a proper buffer, not on your last few percent. The buffer matters more here than elsewhere, because it doubles as your insurance against an occupied or broken charger.
- Charge overnight where you sleep. That's the actual solution.
- Keep Beatty in mind as the fallback – 69 km.
- Download offline maps and charger locations beforehand, while you have signal.
- Account for the heat. Above 40 °C the air conditioning draws noticeably, and you won't want to switch it off there. Pre-cooling while the car is still plugged in saves more than you'd think.
The part that helps most isn't technical
Honestly, most of this dissolves at the level of pace.
Travel by the 3-3-3 rule – around 300 miles a day, at your site by afternoon, several nights in one place – and you charge overnight and never meet the problem. Try to cover 600 miles a day and you meet it. In Death Valley especially.
It's the same thought as in Three Ways to Drive the Same Road: range anxiety is usually a pace problem and rarely a technical one.

The conclusion, unvarnished
Death Valley is not a place to improvise. It's the park on our routes that demands the most preparation: there is no fast charging inside it, reception is unreliable, and the heat punishes people and equipment alike.
But it is not the EV no-go zone some forums make it out to be. There is power in the park, there is fast charging 69 km away, and there is one simple rule that solves nearly all of it: charge overnight where you sleep.
Accept that, and you get one of the most extraordinary places in North America – and a car that is completely silent there at night.
